National Parks
Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda's largest national park, is located in the northwestern region of the country. It spans approximately 3,893 square kilometers (1,503 square miles) across the districts of Buliisa, Nwoya, Kiryandongo, and Masindi. The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, which flows westward through the park, creating the spectacular Murchison Falls where the river forces its way through a narrow gorge before tumbling 43 meters (141 feet) into the rift valley below
Established in 1952, Murchison Falls National Park is part of the larger Murchison Falls Conservation Area, which includes the Bugungu Wildlife Reserve and the Karuma Wildlife Reserve. Together, these protected areas offer diverse habitats ranging from savannah grasslands to dense forests, supporting a wide array of wildlife. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity, hosting over 76 mammal species, including elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, and various antelope species. Bird enthusiasts can also delight in spotting over 450 bird species, such as the shoebill stork, Goliath heron, and white-thighed hornbill.
Visitors to Murchison Falls National Park can engage in various activities, including game drives, boat cruises on the Nile, and chimpanzee tracking in the Budongo Forest Reserve. The park's accessibility, approximately a 4 to 5-hour drive from Kampala, Uganda's capital, makes it a popular destination for both local and international tourists seeking to experience Uganda's natural beauty and wildlife.
